Bolt grades and types

An overview of the various bolts available in standard and metric.

Grade 5

Material: medium carbon steel. Usually silver in color from clear zinc plating.

Grade 8

Material: medium carbon alloy steel and heat-treated. Usually orange-gold in color due to yellow zinc plating.

Metric 8.8 Bolts

Material: medium carbon steel. Usually silver in color due to clear zinc plating. Same performance as Grade 5.

Metric 10.9 Bolts

Material: medium carbon alloy steel and heat-treated. Usually silver in color due to clear zinc plating. Same performance as Grade 8.

Stainless 304 Bolts

Material: General purpose, corrosion-resistant stainless composed of 18% chromium and 8% nickel.

Stainless 316 Bolts

Material: Superior corrosion resistance with a composition of 16% chromium, 10% nickel, and 2% molybdenum.

Stainless Metric Grade A2 (304)

Material: General purpose, corrosion-resistant stainless composed of 18% chromium and 8% nickel.

Stainless Metric Grade A4 (316)

Material: Superior corrosion resistance with a composition of 16% chromium, 10% nickel, and 2% molybdenum.

Structural Bolts- A325, A490

Heavy Hex Head style bolt for construction, bridges, and utility applications.

Carriage Bolts

Material: Carbon steel with clear zinc finish. Head style is round and smooth. Designed not to snag. Available in galvanized, too.

Lag Bolts

A pointed tip bolt with a hex head made with a course thread to fasten pieces of lumber together. Requires pre-drilling pilot holes.
